A bird's paradise just this summer.
Some days are okay but others are stressful.
Yesterday was a stressful day.
Decisions, decisions, lots of decisions to make.
I shall probably post a few more photos as time goes by
but it is sad and overwhelming to see the miles of
beautiful forest land and homes that have been burned out.
If a home was touched by fire it burned to the ground.
The blaze was swift moving and pushed by 40 MPH winds
and the fuel was plentiful because of a drought the worst
Texas has seen since the mid-1900s.
Lots of green grass, ivy and trees.
The bird feeders are still standing.
When we got home last Thursday morning we were surprised to
see lots of birds in our backyard even after the fire.
They were still coming to the feeders and
the hummingbirds were visiting their feeders.
Saturday evening when we went back to feed
Miss Kitty we could see the wild rabbit that was a regular visitor.
To the right and behind the trees you can see the
tool shed of our neighbor.
In front of and to the left of it is the remains of their home.
It is burned to the ground as are over 1700 homes in the area.
It is unbelievable that our house stands.
Across the street five homes burned.
On the same side of our street six more burned.
We still have the Hackberry tree just to the left of the house.
Luckily we have insurance that will cover some of the loss of the trees.
Hopefully we can buy a few large trees to put in spots
around the south and west sides of the house.
The trees to the north and in front of the house are doing well.
The trees to the north and in front of the house are doing well.
Our attic has a lot of smokey smell to it and
will need to be cleaned, insulation removed & replaced,
and duct work cleaned.
The inside of the house will need to be cleaned also.
The people responsible for this service say the house will
smell very fresh once they finish.
I don't know if the refrigerator can be saved after being
without electricity for 12 days.
Just up from the Hackberry tree and the south-side of our property.
The little piles are the remains of our out-building
that housed the riding lawn mower and other tools.
All the trees are burned 15 to 20 feet up the trunks.
We need to get a tree service to cut and remove all the trees.
The Texas Forestry Service is looking into getting seedlings
for people to replant on their property.
Of course the G-man and I will never see them grow
into big beautiful trees.
Most of these trees are 30 to 50 years old and
many more are older than that.
At least the 150 year old tree in our front yard is still alive.
We desperately need rain to help keep the ones that survived alive.

What devastation--it's really miraculous that your house survived. It's also heartening to learn about the wild birds & the rabbit--& of course, Miss Kitty. I'm sorry you are faced with this tho, & can only imagine how difficult it must be.
Thank you for this. Wow. I'm sure it is overwhelming. I thought you would never be able to go home, but I'm so glad for the land itself that you'll be there. You are a healing presence that can help the shock of what's happened recede.
But what of you, dear Cheryl? How will you restore the bits of your soul that burned in the fire?
I think of you with much love and admiration. Shalom.
I am sad about this. Am happy that your house is still standing. And as those animals didn't leave you, so I am promising that you guys will continue to be in my prayers esp those that are badly affected...
God bless and take care!

I love the thought Reya had, that you are a healing presence that will help the shock of the devastation recede. The birds still coming to the bird feeder know this to be true. Sometimes a disaster will draw strength from our souls and we somehow find the energy to regroup and rebuild. What ever the coming months bring, I can offer encouragement and love. Today, for the old tree in the front garden that survived, I am sending a smile. =D
For whatever chance that saved your house I am grateful. But oH, the devastation. It would pain me to have to look at that all the time. Good signs that the creatures survived and I think the land will recover faster than you fear. Let the recovery of the land delight you as you watch it unfold. It will be different certainly but still the same as well.
The little birds, the Hummingbirds, the rabbit, Miss Kitty - all hanging on for you both, dependent upon you yet showing the way, to carry on, renew, continue. Regrowth, new shoots, animals, insects all manner of living things rising from the ashes will lift your spirits over time, and yes, you wont see the saplings grow huge but you may plant little things that grow rapidly to feed your soul and show the hope and expectation for the future you need now. May your trauma and fears subside rapidly ♥
So happy to see your house still standing. What a miracle! Oh those trees.... but great to think of new ones being planted, and so pleased that the birds are still around. Thinking of you!
the devastation is astonishing. nature will continue - the challenge for people is to accept the unacceptable and move on. i am so glad that you guys are safe and i wish you well as you help the little bit of the earth you take care of return to its beautiful self. steven
Dear Friends, This morning I awoke to your words of love and encouragement and they brought the needed tears to my eyes that I have been unable as yet to shed. Traumatized, dazed, confused, and disrupted have been the words to describe the last couple of weeks.
I need to reflect on each of your comments and use them to guide me. Thanks you so much for caring.
Hope the prayed for rain arrives and helps cleanse away the ashes and brings forth new growth, as well as hope and comfort to your lives and area, Cheryl.
You will prevail. I'm happy to know that you still have a house, though sad for those who don't. As a first time homeowner I can imagine losing everything, and it's a nightmare.
Cheryl, I hope you and Gerald will approach this rebuilding positively, and with a sense of renewal. My thoughts are with you both as you face a new direction...
Rick
Rick, thanks for the good wishes. I think we'll do okay but it will be a long road. Staying positive is sometimes a challenge when seeing all the devastation. Today I watered some plants that are trying their darnedest to come back... a bit of green amongst the gray and brown... really pretty.
It is amazing that your beautiful home is still standing. It is sad that the trees are no longer, but the planting of new trees represents a renewal and a new beginning for both of you.
I am hoping that rain arrives soon.
Take care, Cheryl
It's hard to say anything I haven't already and it's even tougher to try to these warm and supportive comments which are all so full of love. Between their words and yours, Cheryl, it's easy to tear up. And your pictures with the descriptions bring home the devastation even more. As I've said before, I am just glad your home is standing and that you, Gerald and all the animals are safe. It is the little creatures and twigs that are sprouting anew which offer hope for the living, even while the heart and soul are breaking.
(((((((hugs)))))))
