Being Thankful

My "feisty" gentleman -- the G-man

This week two of my friends lost their husbands to illness. Every day I am thankful for the moments I have with the G-man. Time goes by, we change from what we were like in our younger years. Sometimes these changes are for the better. I'm still the basic me, but hopefully a bit more mellow.

Reya has recently talked about life changes of bodies and environments. Her post brought back thoughts of adjusting to new challenges. Sometimes it is as difficult to adjust to the changes in our bodies as it is to adjust to a new environment.

Since the year 2000 I have gone through many changes. In the fall of 2000 I separated from and a man I had been with for about 22 years, took Gertie & moved back into our condo in downtown Austin, then in June, to make life easier for the soon-to-be ex-husband, I moved back to our house in the country. I lived alone & adjusted to caring for myself & the animals. I decided I liked my own schedule and not have to bend to the needs of someone else. I continued as librarian at an elementary school, decided to get a master's degree in educational technology, and worked & went back to school for 2 years. Somewhere in the middle of that I worked out a divorce & kept moving forward.

After receiving my graduate degree I had a little "extra" time and along about December I met the G-man. Life was fun again. I was excited about a new relationship with someone who was and still is delightful. Time went by (about 1 1/2 years) and I sold my house in the country, gave away my wonderful horse to a good friend, sold almost all my furniture, and moved with Gertie & my art collection to the G-man's home. I've never looked back; I'm happy, Gertie's happy, and the G-man is happy.

Sometimes when I was down I would wonder if living somewhere else would be better for me. Well I know I'm better living in the here & now, but it is not a town I would have chosen if it were not for the fact that the G-man ended up here some time ago. I remind myself of a quote from the novel "Lonesome Dove" by Larry McMurtry when Gus (my favorite character) was explaining to Lorena, who wanted only to leave a dusty little nothing of a south Texas town and live in San Francisco, that life is life no matter where you are and you must make the best of it.

Gus's advice to Lorena:
"Life in San Francisco is still just life. If you want one thing too much it's likely to be a disappointment. The healthy way is to learn to like the everyday things, like soft beds and buttermilk--and feisty gentlemen."

Oh yes, life is just life and I want to enjoy every moment of it that I can. I don't need to travel to exotic places or to be wealthy. Good health & happiness, a soft bed, a glass of milk, & my "feisty" gentleman... life is good!

A nice post, Lizzy and I love Robert Duvall!

My man's been away for three days, I've got a lot done in his absence; keeping busy, in other words. But, when that's all done, I could not imagine living alone, without him. We're also at the age when we're losing friends too; you never know what tomorrow will bring, so we live for today and each other - a lovely life together, making the most of it!

Life can be sweet, just as it is, however it is. Lovely post.

I think people either generally think life is goof or they don't. It's important to find things to be hapy about.

Oh Lizzy this is such a lovely post!!!!!
And you know... I feel so related to it, because my life had something alike around 1999 and 2001.
And I'm so grateful that life and the Universe gave me a second chance (in many ways)to be with a man like Hubby.
It's important to see that we have great people around us, like you have G-man. I'm happy for you, my dear.

Hope you're having a nice long weekend.

xoxo

Steven, yes, I think making life simpler is a way to more happiness; at least it is for me. I don't like drama and living the simple life is usually free of drama. Thanks for stopping by on this fine Sunday.

Lakeviewer, yes, I think these are wise words. McMurtry put a great deal of simple philosophy into this wonderful piece of literature.

Alaine, sometimes it is nice to have some quiet time to get things done, but in the end having that special man at home safely is a great feeling.

Bonnie & Secret Agent, yes life can be good and we must make the best of it. One must be happy within oneself because there is no escaping. No matter where you go, there you are.

Ahhh Seeker, we were going through trials and tribulations at the same time. Aren't we lucky we came through and are now in such good places? Hope you have a good week ahead.
