Spring Turkeys at Jackass Flats

It's what male turkeys (Toms) do in the spring.
They strut around the females
and have ferocious battles amongst themselves.

As I was driving along Hwy. 71 near Marble Falls, TX
early last Sunday morning, a big tom turkey
flew over the highway and landed in a field
on the other side of the road.

I turned around & went back to see if it was in
pursuit of a female,
but what I found was two toms in a
serious battle to win some females heart.

For about 10 minutes they fought
until one of them finally...

had enough punishment...

yelled "uncle" and...

ran off into the brush.

In the distance I could hear lots of
clucking and feel sure it was from
the females down below.

The day before at about the same time of day
I saw this flock of turkeys
running around the pasture across the highway at
Jackass Flats... yes, that's the name of the ranch.

Jackass Flats
Toms the day before chasing females at Jackass Flats.

In the photo above the gray donkey and below the dun colored donkey
are saying...
"Look at those dumb turkeys!"

The "jackasses" are enjoying a little bit of heaven
in the Texas Hill Country.
It was a superb morning!

Isn't springtime grand?!

Beautiful! Looks like there is some GREEN going on for a change there. Mom's bluebonnets are blooming, she said. Last Oct. we were there in Marble Falls since my cousin and husband have houses at Lake Buchanan. At least they keep the water in Marble Falls.... Buchanan, I hear is still quite dry due to a lack of rain further north. I do hope the drought lets up. Cheers to Gerald!

They yelled "UNCLE"? haha, never heard that! what a sight that fight must have been. Your pictures are beautiful. No spring here yet, but we are waiting!
I hope your flowers and trees around the house are shooting up and bringing new life to the burnt surroundings.
Thinking of you even if I don`t write. Angela

Lizzy, what an entertaining post! I have no idea how you managed to capture all those shots, but each one is fabulous.

Thank you for putting a big ol' grin on my face today, and for informing me of all the going's on around Jackass Flats (it's even fun just to say that name)!
