Spring Turkeys at Jackass Flats

It's what male turkeys (Toms) do in the spring.

They strut around the females

and have ferocious battles amongst themselves.

As I was driving along Hwy. 71 near Marble Falls, TX

early last Sunday morning, a big tom turkey

flew over the highway and landed in a field

on the other side of the road.

I turned around & went back to see if it was in

pursuit of a female,

but what I found was two toms in a

serious battle to win some females heart.

For about 10 minutes they fought

until one of them finally...

had enough punishment...

yelled "uncle" and...

ran off into the brush.

In the distance I could hear lots of 

clucking and feel sure it was from

the females down below.

The day before at about the same time of day

I saw this flock of turkeys

running around the pasture across the highway at

Jackass Flats... yes, that's the name of the ranch.

are saying...

"Look at those dumb turkeys!"

The "jackasses" are enjoying a little bit of heaven

in the Texas Hill Country.

It was a superb morning!

Isn't springtime grand?!

Spring is Coming to Central Texas

March 1st arrives in central Texas tomorrow
and with it comes the beauty of spring.

Flowering fruit trees,
red buds,
greening of oaks and willows
will be breaking out in
the weeks to come.

Once again we'll try to have a garden of
pretty flowers,
but as dry as it gets here blooms will come
early in spring or wait until autumn.

I shall try to get back to blogging.
I overdid it in our yard about 3 weeks ago
and have been recuperating from strained muscles.
It's not fun.
At my age it is much more difficult to bounce back.
All this has even effected the time I spend at the computer;
sitting for long spells is somewhat painful.
My chiropractor and regular physician are getting me
back in the swing of things.

Lovely ranch land.
It is so wonderful to see the stock tanks full of water!

This is a small, pretty rural subdivision
along Hwy 304

I did not go down each street,
but I suspect there are no more
than 30 homes spread out in this area.
I expect the home sites are about 20 acres each.

The lots are deeply wooded with creeks &
ravines running through them.

Morning Drive... Spring on Hwy 304

Wednesday morning was beautiful.
The air was cool & crisp with a clear, blue sky.

I decided to drive down Hwy 304
just west & south of Bastrop.

Above is the livestock arena where animals are auctioned each Wednesday.

When I got out of the car to take photographs
I was enveloped by the scent of wild flowers.
It always amazes me that the smell is so aromatic.
I don't expect the scent; I only expect to enjoy the color.

The ranch land is beautiful with its green grass
sprinkled with red and blue flowers.

This ranch land is for sale.

The land to the left is part of the acreage for sale.
If I were younger...

Across the highway is another piece of property where goats roam.

The little stretch of roadway shown today

is located in the areareferred to as Hills Prairie.

Hills Prairie Baptist Church is ready for Easter Services.
