Thursday's Two-fer

I've been a little slow to "produce" this week. Seems I've got too many things going on to stay focused. This morning I dropped off Gertie at the veterinarian to have her teeth cleaned. I always worry so much about having anything remotely surgical done to her, but I know having it done is better for her than not doing it.

Today I thought I'd do a "two-fer". The first is about a recent wine purchase and the second is about my visit to the Cedar Park Farmers Market last weekend.

I am not much of a wine connoisseur, but I do enjoy a glass of red wine a couple of times a week. Usually I buy a local (Hill Country) wine or something from Chile or Argentina, but the other day I was in a new-ish grocery store (chain) in Austin called "Sprouts" and decided to check out their wines. This time I decided to just go on the look of the label. I tried the two below just for fun.

Obviously the Drink & Eat Boire & Manger
with the cows on the label had to go home with me.
Gerald knew I would not be able to resist
buying these two even if they ended up
tasting like vinegar (which they did not).

My favorite is Broke Ass Red Wine from Argentina.
Don't you just love the band-aid on the "ass"?
The label says, "No Frills Great Table Wine".
Oh yeah, I'm buying it again!

Hot Dog
poor pitiful puppy
It was pretty warm although there was a
nice breeze and not too hot as long
as one could find some shade.

I just could not bring Gertie with me this weekend.
The temperature is just too hot;
so she is staying at Best Friends Boarding Too.
She has her own little doggie condo
with a yard & there is even a
swimming pool in the shape of a dog bone.
Way cool!

Ha! Love, love, love the Broke Ass wine. I, too, always wonder if those wines with corny labels are any good. Or just good to give as gag gifts. A few weeks ago I saw a bottle of wine at Trader Joe's and the only label on it was a painted yellow smiley face. I almost bought it just because of that. Come to think of it, I think I'm going to go back there and buy it on my way home from work. It would look great on my kitchen counter, and a great conversation piece.

Although I think I'll look for the Broke Ass wine too.

They sure do have some funny names for wines these days! I have not seen either one of these!

So nice to have a great farmer's market nearby. Down here Houston has several but I'm not driving an hour there and back for that. Wharton has a struggling market but it's only open in the spring and fall. And we don't know if it is going to survive. the couple that made it happen have moved away and last spring it managed to continue but without any real leadership. So now, new people have stepped in but they don't really know what to do. It's a big question whether or not it will open this fall.

Gave me a big laugh this morning! I'm going to the big wine store here in Rochester today and see if they have Broke Ass wine!

I know NOTHING about wines. They generally give me a headache. But I will buy a bottle or two every time at duty free when I come back from Toronto. Not too long ago I also bought a bottle just 'cause the label looked "fisticated". It was just awful!! Had to pour it down the sink.

But one wine I had in a cafe a couple of years ago I do buy regularly: Yellow Tail. It's an inexpensive, but good wine, and doesn't leave me with a throbbing head. Austrailian.....

By the way, Lizzy, is Hiney Wine still produced? Back in the 70's they had the absolute funniest radio commercials for Hiney Wine. One can just imagine!

Hey Rick... I'm so pleased to give you a yuck this morning! I buy Yellow Tail from time to time also and like you I look for something that doesn't give me a headache after just one glass. It's always a challenge.

... and I don't know about Hiney Wine, but I did teach with a woman who was Miss Hiney... one can only imagine how having that name would effect the self image.

The broken ass wine made me LOL.

It's rare I find a Texan blogger.... by any chance, do you happen to be from Austin?

Cheryl Cato said...

Hi Julia, I'm happy you stopped by my blog and that you had a chuckle from the Broke Ass Wine! I do not live in Austin now, but for 20+ years I lived on West 6th Street, downtown Austin. Now I live about 30 miles away in Bastrop but come back to the 'hood for a visit quite often. You can take the girl out of Austin, but...

Poor doggie!

Love all of this. I often buy wine because I like the label. Fortunately for me, my palate is not sophisticated so I tend to enjoy pretty much all of it.

Lovely post. I never thought I'd go for lavender with my associated 'old lady' connotations, but I've recently 'discovered' it too.
